Telephone Hookup

Arranging for telephone connection is simple. Call or e-mail the telephone company directly.

Instruct the phone company as to how many lines you would like installed, and whether you would like to rent telephone sets. If renting a handset, visit the Hong Kong Telecom shop in Central to make your selection. Alternatively, you can purchase a handset from any of the city’s plentiful electronics shops or Fortress (http://www.fortress.com.hk), located in Central, and Admiralty, amongst other locations.

PCCW is the main provider of telephone and broadband services, although, the establishment in recent years of rival companies (listed below) has shaken its monopolistic hold on the Hong Kong telephony industry.

After arranging for the hookup, a technician will arrive at your residence to activate the lines. You will need to be present to instruct the technician where you would like the phones.

If you require IDD long distance service, you will have to go down to one of the PCCW shops to apply for the service and pay a deposit. Mobile phones may also be purchased at these stores.

If you require broadband, enquire if this service is available through your chosen phone company and apply for this service at the same time.

Local Calls

Local, landline calls are free.

Do not dial (852) for local calls, just the eight digit number.

Long Distance Calls

For regular IDD service, dial 00 + country code + area code + telephone number.
All phone companies offer varying rates for long distance calls, so it is worth shopping aound before commiting to one operator.  Zone 1511 (www.zone1511.com) offers substantially reduced long distance rates.

Mobile/Cell Phones

Mobile phones are a way of life in Hong Kong and everyone from the very young to the very old seem to be in possession of at least one, and are not discrete about using them. Speaking on a mobile phone in a restaurant is perfectly acceptable in Hong Kong.  The only place youa re not permitted to use a mobile is in a private club.

Cellular phone charges in Hong Kong are among the lowest in the world. There are currently six mobile phone network suppliers in operation providing nine brand names in GSM, PCS and CDMA formats. Phones from America will not work in Hong Kong, unless they are tri-band.

Broadband

Netvigator owned by PCCW is the main provider of Broadband services, although there are now more companies on the market offering highly competitive rates and services.

Before installation, you will need to phone the relevant company to ensure that you are in an area that can be serviced by broadband. Once this has been established, you may have to fill out an application form, which the provider can fax to you. An installation date will be set for a technician to come to your home and make
the necessary connections and install the requisite software. Connection should take no longer than 30 minutes.

Internet Café’s

Hong Kong does not actually have the kind of “Cybercafe’s” that are becoming so popular and lucrative in the rest of the world. Because local calls are free, the few cafes that do provide Internet access do not charge for it and, as a result, your time is extremely limited (usually 15 minutes per person). However, if you just want to check your mail, these will suit you just fine. You will be expected to purchase a cup of coffee or something to eat in order to qualify for use.
