• Restaurants will normally add 10% service charge to your bill, so check before you add any more. It is customary to add a bit more cash, or another 5% on top of the service charge depending on the level of service provided.
• Tipping for services rendered, such as rounding the taxi fare up to the nearest dollar and tipping the petrol station attendant HK$5 or HK$10 for checking your oil, water and tire pressure, and tipping your barber or hairdresser is a good thing to do to ensure good service the next time time you go.
• At Chinese New Year, tipping in the form of money in a red packet or "lai see" is especially necessary and expected; give "lai see" to those who regularly provide you with good service. HK$20-50 is usually adequate.
